Mud Baths
Yes, mud baths are sanitary. Our hygienic mud baths require careful and thoughtful preparation, and utilize scalding hot mineral water which acts as a sanitizer. The alkaline in Calistoga’s unique combination of volcanic ash, peat moss, and mineral water works to kill bacteria. Fresh mud is also added over time and flushed with 180 degree mineral water. Your health and safety are our utmost priority and a clean environment is paramount to our guest experience.
During your mud bath treatment, you will immerse yourself in the mud for 15 minutes, but that is just part of the entire experience. Your spa attendant will guide you through the process and advise how long you should soak in your mud bath.
Mud baths contain a high amount of sulfur, which can sometimes smell strongly, but mud bath smell is an indicator of the important essential minerals contained in the mud which treat the body.
Most guests opt to not wear anything and be naked during a mud bath treatment in order to allow all of the body’s skin to reap the benefits of the mud’s minerals. However, you can absolutely wear a bathing suit, though be aware that volcanic ash can stain garments. Your spa attendant will assist you throughout the treatment so that your privacy is respected and you are comfortable entering and exiting the mud bath.
Yes, mud baths are extremely good for your skin. Due to the high temperature of a mud bath, the heat draws out toxins and impurities in the skin, opening the pores, absorbing oils, and encouraging circulation. Mud baths also have anti-inflammatory properties and exfoliate dead skin cells, leaving you with soft, detoxified skin.
The unique volcanic ash soil found in Calistoga is the result of ancient volcanic activity in the area. This mineral-rich soil mixed with the mineral water drawn from the natural underground hot springs in the area mix to create the “magic mud” that is the signature of the legendary mud bath treatment not found anywhere else. The mud in Calistoga contains essential minerals like Kaolinite, bentonite, magnesium, potassium, and other minerals which contribute to the health benefits of mud bathing.

Mineral Waters
Our mineral pools draw their water from our natural underground hot spring on property. These healing waters contain minerals like sulfur, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and bromine that have numerous benefits for the skin, muscles, and body.
Yes, there are underground hot springs in Calistoga. The area is world-renowned for its hot springs, local charm, and wineries. Dr. Wilkinson’s hot springs hotel features three mineral pools that draw water from its underground hot spring on property.
Calistoga hot springs are heated geothermally - meaning heat from the earth underground. These geothermal forces and tectonic activity within the earth raises the temperature of our mineral pools up to 104 degrees, though the waters are much hotter at the source. How are the mineral pools heated
Dr. Wilkinson’s three mineral pools draw mineral water from the resort’s underground natural hot spring. The hot spring is 100% geothermally heated - forces deep within the earth raise the temperature of the waters naturally - and that water is funneled into the mineral pools at a temperature of up to 104 degrees. The heated mineral pools, all set to different warm temperatures, make for amazing, therapeutic soaks year-round.
Geothermal steam is steam created by the very hot water in our natural hot spring under the earth’s surface. The steam is piped into our spa for use in our steam room and mud bath treatments and features the same mineral-rich, therapeutic properties of our mineral waters.
Hydrotherapy refers to treatments that use water to treat the body. Our hydrotherapy experiences and treatments include soaks in our mineral pools, mineral bath treatments, and steam room. All of our hydrotherapy offerings use the healing mineral waters drawn from our natural underground hot spring. Hydrotherapy has been used to treat joints, erase body aches, cure and treat the skin, improve circulation, and relax and sooth sore muscles. Hydrotherapy has been used by spas, wellness practitioners, and doctors since the beginning of recorded history.
Thermotherapy is also known as heat therapy. Thermotherapy uses heat at varying warm temperatures to treat the body. Thermotherapy is particularly beneficial for treating muscle pain and joint stiffness, improving circulation and anti-inflammatory responses, and removing impurities and toxins from the skin. Thermotherapy is a core element of Calistoga’s signature mud bath treatments, and uses natural geothermal heat drawn from our underground hot spring.
